Decision Time

Yesterday, the management at Ning (the platform on which this site is built) said that they would discontinue the free status of the site - even the ad-supported version we're running. This applies to every site on the network.

So now, dear friends, we face a choice: should we continue this site or should we shut it down? If it's the latter, is there a better place for us to meet…

Thanks for the link on the IHOSE Facebook page to The Human Business Way podcast. It's nice to be reminded of your other not inconsiderable accomplishments. It makes all that you do in the Sherlockian world that much more impressive IMHO.

Sorry for the poor spelling, punctuation, and syntax. I wrote my comment in "the heat of the moment". My proof reading skill usually don't kick in until just after it's too late.

In an episode where I get a mention, IHOSE 46 on Elementary, I hate to take exception with you and Burt, but there are a couple of things I feel I must say in defense of the show. I agree with Burt that drug addiction is too serious a thing to play around with in the character of Holmes, and in the pilot episode it does seem, along with the "whoring" (as the Victorians would call it), tossed in to make Holmes edgy, it is too early to tell how seriously the showrunners will take it. In episode 2, Holmes is seen going to support groups. We may get a serious treatment of a problem that may be more common today than it was 120 years ago. When Burt says, "...so does that mean he's going to have a gambling addiction and Watson's going to be trying to keep him away from Atlantic City?" he surely hasn't forgotten that it was Watson who had to have his checkbook locked up and who bet half his wound pension on the ponies? Watson's gambling problem was made light of in both the Downey movies.

Also, Scott, your comment that "the writers of this show tend to go a little to far in trying to create Holmes the societal misfit"; I think that Elementary does not go as far as the Downey movies or Sherlock in portraying Holmes as rude or clueless in his interaction with others; the scene with Mary in the restaurant in SH1 or Sherlock saying his client is a stupid overweight porn addict with a probable short life span in his presence. In fact, in episode 2, Miller after pulling a man aside and using "persuasion", not to expose the man's methamphetamine use to Captain Gregson, to elicit information says to him, "Also, um...when you're ready to get your life back on track...Hemdale Rehabilitation Facility gets may very strongest recommendation. They even have a pool." This, and not telling Watson what he really deduced about why she quit being a surgeon so as not to hurt her feelings, shows that this Holmes cares about others. And suggesting someone treat their drug problem also addresses Burt's concern.

I wonder, too, if you are making a meta-commentary on Elementary by rerunning Edgar's Gas-Lamp from Vol. 6 No. 1 in saying that Elementary is a retread of Sherlock or of other Holmes depictions. That Gas-Lamp was used almost exactly one year ago, October 5, 2011 in Episode 36: Michael Hoey and the Fabulous Faces of Universal.

I hope you and Burt will revisit Elementary, perhaps at mid-season, and reassess the show. Pilots are not the best representation of a series and my personal opinion is that there is an improvement. Hopefully it continues.

That said, it was another thought provoking episode. Well done as always.

Inspired by "Episode 45: Sherlock Holmes and Politics", I've thought of some merchandizing you can do: A bumper sticker with the square Sherlock logo and the slogan YES IHOSE. There should be three choices of background color--red, blue and hounds-tooth.

Another enjoyable show "Fathers in the Canon". While I get quite of information and entertainment in your interview shows, I like the episodes where it's two friends, you and Burt, get together and knowledgeably chat on Sherlockian topics.

Just heard the Colin McEnroe Show interview with Moffat and Vertue through the "Bit of News" section on the Baker Street Blog. Very interesting. My only issue with it is not enough Scott Monty. Thanks for the link. Waiting for Sunday night.
