If I had to choose a Disney character to sum up my life, Belle from Beauty and the Beast would fit the bill quite nicely: A free spirit with endless curiosity and a voracious appetite for books. (The fact that she ended up with a library bigger than my house has absolutely nothing to do with it. Okay, maybe a little bit...)

The first week of 8th grade, my English teacher assigned a short story entitled "The Red-Headed League" as homework. I read it twice in one evening, took my textbook back to my teacher the next day and said, "Tell me there are more of these, and tell me where to find them." Thus began my love affair with Sherlock Holmes.

King, The Enola Holmes Series by Nancy Springer (Where were these when I was 13?!), Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, 1984 by George Orwell, Temeraire by Naomi Novik, The Sally Lockhart Mysteries by Phillip Pullman, all things Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens, Michael Crichton, L.M. Montgomery and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Favorite Holmes:

Jeremy Brett, although my mother made sure I was raised with a healthy appreciation for Basil Rathbone.
