See my comment about the Peter Cushing Hammer version of the movie. It does occur to me that this is a running theme in the book. Even in the Adventure of the Red Circle, the villain is Italian-American. As I recall, in The Sussex Vampire, the So...

Just saw the trailer on the Warner Bros. site. I am not sure what to make of it. The character names are Sherlock Holmes, Dr Watson, Irene Adler etc and the movie is set in Victorian London ( I think ) but nothing else makes any sense. I am not pu...

You actually SEE the bull pup in the trailer reacting to one of Holmes' experiments.

On another point, did Watson even have a dog? I've read that "keeping a bull pup" means being subject to temper at times.

The love and interest (of a true fan) comes from the reading of the original stories: about ten years ago I was a substitute teacher at our town's High School. Computers had been placed in the library, and it was used as a study hall more than any...

Has anyone seen the NEW trailer for the Guy Ritchie's disgrace of a Holmes film ?? I guess it's supposed to make us feel better. Let's see,Holmes and Watson are STILL acting like a couple of idiots. There's a silly bit about Holmes putting a stick ...

I've noticed that younger people really have no sense of who Sherlock Holmes is. If I mention that I'm currently reading such and such book, they're like, "Wait, there's a book?" Some people actually don't know that Sherlock Holmes is not just som...

About Me:
Retired Mycroftian bureaucrat. Widower. University lecturer at Indiana University and one of the world's oldest doctoral students. Relatively active member of the Illustrious Clients of Indianapolis. Lover of 1950s B-science fiction films and well done parodies like Lost Skeleton of Cadavera.

Favorite Books:
In Sherlockian scholarship terms, probably Stashower's ACD biography and the recent Life in Letters book.
From the Canon, HOUN and SIGN take precedence over the other novellas and the short story collections.
Right now, (11/2008) I', reading Spies' Wives, a collection of vignettes from the lives of women married to CIA officers.
Favorite Holmes:
Hard to pick because different actors brng different gifts, I actually like Ronald Howard from the 1950s tv series because he actually looked the right age for Holmes in the 1880s, but of course Jeremy Britt for his acting chops and insistence on honoring the Canon. Basil Rathbone, especially in the 20th Century Fox, films was exceedingly charismatic and was the first Holmes on film I knew
How did you discover this site?
Hounds has and exellent reputation and I wanted to include it in a list of references for my students in a non-credit Holmes-Watson class I'm teaching for the first time.

I came across a copy of a flattering review you once did of my small monograph entitled "The firearms ofSherlock Holmes." Joe Coppola must have sent it to me. I don't believe I ever thanked for it so I do so now, however belatedly. Gene McGinley
