Fitting in with Donald's point about the "foreign evil" perspective of the story: The funniest thing is the Hammer Studios edition of the Hound movie is that the wife from South America is portrayed as the REAL mastermind behind Stapleton's plans. Its the movie version that teens most enjoy (because its the creepiest--Hammer specializes in horror--and it shows) but I hesitate to show it to my Middle School students since many are Mexican-American, and I felt funny about showing a movie where the only Hispanic person in the movie is the villain! Talk about Anglo-Centric!:)

Hi Peter. In answer to your question, I would like start by saying that on-balance, I like the Cushing version of 'Houn' because it was the first such film to be shot in colour. However, I also feel that the screenwriters approach to the original storyline was far too liberal i.e. Henry Baskerville and the spider incident! I also think that Cushing's portrayel of Holmes was very melodramatic, although I liked Morrell as Watson (incidentally, Morrell was a local boy, born in Plymouth near Dartmoor). Overall, I would score it 6/10). Regards, Paul.
