Hi Anne

Many thanks indeed. Your participation is very much appreciated!

Obviously, the weightier a petition becomes the more likely it is to have an impact upon prevailing political thinking (because it translates into votes). However, I also think that signatories from overseas will play an important role in persuading the local decision makers to act in both a responsible and sensitive manner.

My very best wishes,

Paul.

My pleasure! If I have managed to contribute in saving the building by signing that petition, I would consider myself fortunate.

Great!!! There are nearly 300 members on this website from throughout the world - lets hope that some more will contribute their names to a petition that aims to save the former location of the writing desk that gave us 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes'!!!

The following item includes a link to the petition:

I posted the link to the petition in the Holmesian forum www.holmesian.net/forums/
And I know that at least one person (except me) from there has signed it. There may be others who have signed it anonymously.

Again - many thanks for your help and support - this is precisely the sort of action that will help to build a useful petition.

Just to put you everyone the picture, there is a residential planning application just lodged with Waverly Borough Council. This would be for flats and if approved, 'Undershaw' will be lost to us forever.

My understanding from Waverley Borough Council is that they will give residential planning permission, unless there is a credible alternative on the table. However, there are two alternative schemes being considered at present and a decision is expected in 8 weeks or so:

Plan A - A 4 star hotel, restaurant, weddings, museum, conferences, lectures, concerts, literary meetings etc.

Plan B - A Youth Hostel Association building to be leased from the present owners.

Both these schemes are preferable to the residential plan because at least the facade of the building will remain unaltered (my primary concern).

Regards,

Paul.
