I was wondering what scion societies some of you might belong to? I lived in Chicago for many years and still maintain my membership with The Torists and The Criterion Bar Association.
I belong to (are you ready for this?):
The Speckled Band of Boston
The Friends of Irene Adler
The Cornish Horrors
The Men on the Tor
Cox & Co. of New England
The Billy Club
The Hounds of the Internet
The Clients of Adrian Mulliner
The Trifling Monographers The Beacon Society (Head-Light)
The Bull-Terrier Club (Founder & Magistrate)
And of course, the Baker Street Irregulars (which is the parent group of scion societies)
When I lived in Brooklyn, New York, I helped start the Montague Street Lodgers of Brooklyn. Since I moved to Denver, CO in 1989, I have been a member of Doctor Watson's Neglected Patients. Anyone wishing to know about these particular scions can contact me.
Oooo. Is it ok to do that, email a society directly? I'm always afraid of being rude. May I say that you gave me his contact information (to lend credibility to the mission)?
Absolutely. Ralph and I go way back, so please use my name.
And here's an important note for everyone: Sherlockians are sociable by nature. We want more people like us to join our societies. Even if you feel like you might not know as much as the most learned scholar, remember: we all had to start somewhere. And we like to educate and encourage each other (as you may be able to tell from this forum). The more, the merrier.
If you haven't had a chance, please do take a listen to Episodes 4 & 5 of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere - it's a lesson in Sherlockian 101, including how to join a scion, what goes on at events, resources, etc.
And please feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions.
I'm an undergraduate way up in Portland, Maine, and have been greatly interested in all things Sherlockian since I aquired my copy of the New Anotated Holmes by Leslie Klinger. As far as I can tell there are very few--if any--Sherlockians in Maine. If I want to break into this fascinating and fun world, what should I do aside from moving to Boston?
Actually, Michael, one of the foremost Doylean/Sherlockian collectors lives in Kennebunkport. I could certainly put you in touch with him, if you'd like. Send me a message with your email address and I'll introduce you.
Transportation is a little of an issue when it comes to my joining The Silver Beeches (they are a little over two hours away from my location), but I am interested in finding out if there are any other Scions Societies in Kentucky.
There isn't a group where I live. :-(
I have thought of going to the library to put up a poster, if they would let me, asking if anyone would like to start a group. I have also thought about contacting a group in another city to see if they would sponsor a group here. Actually, it may take a while for me to talk myself into doing something; but most times I end up doing whatever it is. Suggestions are welcome.
I am in Savannah, GA. I know that there is at least one group in Atlanta. Not sure about Charleston, SC and Jacksonville, FL. Savannah is somewhere in between. I have looked around more than once and have never gotten closer than Atlanta.
The local library used Sherlock Holmes and other detective stories as a theme for a fund raiser this year. I read everything I could find about this function; but saw no particular group involvement other than the library or The Friends of the Library.
